Middle of november I’m always starting to prepare everything for christmas.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m a Grinch over and over. But presents need to be bought, food must be planned and the damn tree still needs to join our livingroom.
With christmas in my mind I’m always thinking about one of the best christmas movies of all time: Gremlins.
A young man named Billy Peltzer got a very unique christmas present from his dad, Randall: A strange creature called a Mogwai.
His new pet got the name ‘Gizmo’ and lives from now in Billys room.
They may be cute and lovely, but owning a Mogwai requires some rules:
- Don’t expose it to sunlight.
- Don’t get it wet.
- Don’t feed it after midnight.
When youre disregarding this rules, they change.
From a fluffy little furball to an slimy spawn of hell, a Gremlin, which tries to create chaos wherever it is.
Gremlins comes from the time where comedy horror mashups become popular and I cannot lie – the results are fabulous.
It has a wonderful black humour, wonderful character designs, a simple, but funny story and, what every christmas movie needs: two young people falling in love.
My personal favorite about Gremlins is the Soundtrack, created by Jerry Goldsmith.
There wonderful evil songs in it which fits the morbid christmas story perfectly.
Also the special effects are quite good for an movie from 1984.
My only contra to Gremlins, they’ve could do better. The story could be little rounder and the budget was high enough for some effects than and now.
But all in one, it’s one of the cultiest movies of all time.
I’d rate it with 4/5 Stars.
